On November 14, 2022, I had the great honor of ascending the steps of the great United States Supreme Court to be sworn in to the United States Supreme Court Bar and become an officer of the United States Supreme Court. It was the highest honor of my legal career to swear to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America in front of the Honorable Justices of the Supreme Court. As I stood there with my hand raised, I soaked it all in because, naturally, no photography was allowed in the courtroom. I looked each Justice in the eye and watched them with fascination. In this room, hundreds of our rights had been decided upon. Some decisions were right and others were wrong. But the words “liberty and justice for all” soaked into me with all of the history and majesty. And they soaked into the very marrow of my being. My life has been dedicated to public service. What does that mean? It means that I have always sought to help people. Astraea Law is an extension of that mission. “Liberty and justice for all,” is not merely a cute slogan, but a commandment by The People to our government. It is a commandment to everyone in public service from the President of the United States all the way down to campaign volunteers. Lawyers are an integral part of that pursuit of liberty and justice. No one should have to fight for their rights, liberty, or justice alone. Yet, many people are forced to do so. According to the Legal Services Corporation, low-income Americans receive insufficient or no legal assistance for 92% of their legal problems. This is called the “justice gap,” and it means that poor and low-income people are being trampled every single day because they have been priced out of the market. While legal aid and other pro bono type services go a long way towards solving these issues, one can deduce that they only sufficiently address about 8% of the legal representation needs of low-income and poor Americans.
